Welcome to AUGUST & Happy New Month!
Our Youth of the Month is Mpara Faith Muwar! Mpara Faith Muwar is the Co-founder and Operations Manager of New Generation Technologies (NGT), a software development start-up company in Buea, the South-West Region of Cameroon. She has been the manager of this company for over two years now.
At NGT, they are concern with the provision of solutions for educational institutions by helping schools save time and money through “Scholar” and their implementation services.
They observed a few years back that management of records is a problem in schools, this motivated them to embark on Project “Scholar”; the development of software for management of records in primary, secondary and high schools. It is a web-based application that assists schools to store and track records of pupils, staff, and results. This helps to transfer performance of repetitive tasks like results compilation, periodic reporting and data backups to electronic devices which, they believe, gives the teaching staff more time with their pupils/students, thereby improving learning. Before starting NGT in 2014, Mpara worked as a freelancer on web development projects.
As part of her community engagement and promotion of girls and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), she has been the lead for Women Techmakers Buea for two years. Mpara Faith is passionate about providing quality education to children and youth. In her words, “It is my heartbeat.”
Mpara Faith recently launched ICT4KIDS (1st Edition in 2018), a training program to educate and empower local children in Cameroon. Using lessons in computer programming, game development and graphic design, Mpara and her staff spent six weeks training girls and boys ages 5 to 18.
The program culminated at the University of Buea in a closing ceremony, during which participants received certificates and prizes for their various projects developed during the training sessions. ICT4KIDS also released a video featuring program highlights, such as in-class programming, game design and cartooning sessions. The program is currently going on in Buea, South-West Region of Cameroon.
Kids who took part in this year’s ICT4KIDS program also had the opportunity of having a lunch date with software developers and engineers within the Silicon Mountain Community to talk to the kids about their lives as developers/engineers.
